Nunnington Hall was mentioned in the thirteenth century and has had a succession of different owners. The present building is a combination of 17th and 18th century construction. Most of the building seen today was created during the 1680s. Nunnington Hall is owned, conserved and managed as a visitor attraction by the National Trust.

It has a long reputation for being haunted. One apparition is that of "The Proud Lady of Nunnington" who glides throught the rooms and walks up the staircase, as her silk dress rustles. A spectral dog also haunts the staircase, there is a phantom lady in the garden and fleeting shadows have also been reported about the house.

Audible effects include distant voices. Others have reported the smell of pipe tobacco.
